🔼 Pitch Perfect. An early goal from Avrie Nelsen from a beautiful feed from Dez Zapata gave the Villanova women’s soccer team a lead that the Wildcat defense locked down on en route to a 1-0 victory over Georgetown on Saturday at Higgins Soccer Complex.
The ‘Cats extended its unbeaten streak to 11 to start the season, now sitting at 8-0-3 overall and 3-0-0 in league play. The win marks the eighth shutout for Villanova on the year, matching last year's team total for clean sheets.
Aside from the unbeaten streak, the win also marked a pivotal moment in the series with Georgetown with a couple major streaks that were snapped. The 'Cats had not seen a win in the series prior to Saturday since Oct. 19, 2012 when Villanova topped the Hoyas 1-0 at Higgins.
🔼 Weekend Sweepin’. Playing at home for just the third and fourth times this fall, the Villanova volleyball squad thrilled the home crowd with a pair of BIG EAST sweeps, rolling past both Providence (3-0) and UConn (3-0).
The Wildcats opened the weekend Friday with a 3-0 win over Providence, taking the match 25-18, 25-22, 25-23, following it up on Saturday night by completing another straight-set victory with a 25-20, 25-19, 25-19 sweep of UConn.
Campbell McKinnon powered the offense with a match-high 13 kills in each outing, while Alyssa Nelson handed out 56 assists.
🔼 Friday Fun Day. A balanced scoring attack helped lead the Villanova field hockey team to its second BIG EAST victory of the season on Friday, rolling to a 3-1 win to improve to 7-3 on the year.
Three different 'Cats scored in the win, with Aimee Largoza starting the action in the first quarter and Colleen Finnan added to the lead for Villanova during the second quarter with freshman Adie Minnella assisting on both goals.
Early in the third, senior Gemma Lysaght joined the fun with her seventh of the season to cap off the scoring for VU and eventually give the Wildcats the win.
